Fred’s Story

Fred’s Story

Moved in March 2015

Fred is very excited to do things he has been missing out on the past few years. After more than a decade in homelessness, this military vet is now ready to explore his city. He plans to find a bowling league (he was “pretty good as a kid”), go to museums like Discovery Place and attend a football game, because he has not experienced either in all his years here. He plans to become a library member and start getting DVDs, so he can watch classics like “I Love Lucy” in his new home. Finally, Fred is looking for a Room In The Inn congregation where he can volunteer – he truly appreciated and is now missing the hospitality he experienced in the program each winter he was homeless.

Fred was slow to ask for help, but the Urban Ministry Center Outreach team worked with the VA Outreach to connect him with services and ultimately a housing voucher. Time Warner Cable’s VetNet helped move his furniture from Crisis Assistance Ministry. Fred said before he got his furniture and Welcome Home Kit, he felt like he was “sneaking into something that wasn’t his” because the place felt barren. As the Outreach team left his newly furnished apartment, Fred said his place was finally starting to feel like home!
